Shrewsbury Lawn Tennis Club presented with the Wakeley Trophy after Autumn Mixed Doubles League success

Shrewsbury Lawn Tennis Club enjoyed success at the double in Tennis Shropshire's Autumn Mixed Doubles League.

The club, located in the heart of Shrewsbury close to the River Severn, received two trophies at the league's awards night, which was held during Tennis Shropshire's AGM at The Shrewsbury Club.

Shrewsbury Lawn Tennis Club's first team won the first division title, with the club's second team victorious in division three.

Oswestry Tennis Club were winners of division two in the popular county-wide annual team doubles competition played between September and the start of December.

Woore Tennis Club, winners of both Division Six North and Division Seven North, also won two trophies, while there was divisional success for teams representing Wem Tennis Club, Worfield Tennis Club, Hollies Tennis Club from Whitchurch, Ludlow Castle Tennis Club and Broseley Tennis Club The first division trophy - the Wakeley Trophy - presented by Tennis Shropshire president Keith Smith to Shrewsbury Lawn Tennis Club was a particularly special moment.

It was the first time the trophy had been given to the league champions since 2009 after being recently found.

As Tennis Shropshire chair Fiona Jones explained: "We came across a trophy in a storage room at The Shrewsbury Club when we were looking for something else and we realised it was the trophy for the Autumn Mixed Doubles League winners.

"It had actually not been presented since 2009 as it had been lost.

"Jilly Broadbent kindly polished up the trophy and Liz Boyle, who knows all about the history of tennis competitions in Shropshire, found a number for Jim Wakeley, who donated the Wakeley Trophy in memory of his parents.

“Jim was thrilled to know the trophy, which has a lot of history, had been found and it's really nice that it's now been presented again for the first time in a number of years.”
