Autumn Mixed League postponed - but it may be able to take place later this year
It is hoped that Tennis Shropshire’s Autumn Mixed League, which was scheduled to start next month, may still be able to be played later this year after being postponed.
The current restrictions put in place as a result of Covid-19 means the popular league, involving mixed doubles players from around the county, will not get under way on its scheduled date.
But organisers stress the league has been postponed, rather than cancelled, and remain hopeful it may still be able to take place at some stage.
Tennis Shropshire chair Simon Jones said: “We were very hopeful that we could run it from September, however we didn’t feel comfortable that it was right to run it at the moment whilst we still have restrictions in place that would make it difficult for people to fulfil matches.
“It’s just not feasible to run the Autumn Mixed League at the moment with the current restrictions.
“For a team of four, you would currently require players to travel in four separate cars.
“We have to get back to club tennis and club nights running first before we can even think about running any league tennis.
“Rather than cancelling the Autumn League, the decision has been taken to postpone it, with a view of hopefully putting it on later in the year.
“It’s possible that you could run the Autumn League over about a three-month period.”
