Oswestry Team Tennis – held its very first “Volleywood”

Oswestry Team Tennis – held its very first “Volleywood” at Oswestry Cricket Club on Saturday night with over 100 people of all ages in attendance, and an evening of Oscars, Hall of Fame, red carpet, glitz, annual awards and fun!

Clare Parsons-Hann was the inspiration behind creating the new format to the evening, with our junior members very much involved in running the evening activities including interviewing, presentations, quiz, speed serve competition, and recognition of our junior achievements not only in tennis but also beyond.

The new mix of activities introduced included Matei Balasa interviewing Garmon Evans and Millie Parsons-Hann on their Wimbledon trip to represent North Wales and Shropshire respectively in August in Road to Wimbledon U14 Championships and on their further aspirations. Andrew Hollywell/ Maisie Anderson and Lewis Anderson/ George Grindley interviewed Tennis 2You tennis coaches Ben Syrett –Judd and   Blake Strefford respectively about their work and diverse experiences, not forgetting their more embarrassing moments! The mini table tennis challenge between our coaches resulted in Blake just about claiming bragging rights over Ben with a very close victory 10-9!

Alan Lewis – organiser of Oswestry 10k, who was our guest of honour, talked about his background in local and international sport and offered sound advice to the youngsters, whilst Carlton Leonard kindly took on the role of MC for the evening, performing an excellent job.

14 annual awards were presented to juniors by our Tennis2You coaches Ben Syrett-Judd and Blake Strefford, with last year’s winners on hand to congratulate their successors.

Joe Shiel completed the evening by thanking Clare Parsons-Hann for her creativity and passion to make Volleywood happen  not forgetting her significant support team, and thanking Carlton Leonard as MC, Alan Lewis – guest of honour, Urban Grillhouse for their catering, Oswestry Cricket club for its hospitality and especially everyone else for their involvement
