So close as Shropshire’s over-65s men’s team lose narrowly to Leicestershire
It could not have been any closer as Shropshire’s over-65s men’s team were edged out 3-2 by Leicestershire in their latest match in the LTA’s Seniors’ Inter-County Championships.
Led by captain Rob Rue, the team, pictured, also featured Jim Taylor, who, like Rob, plays his tennis at The Shrewsbury Club, and Ludlow Castle duo Seabury Salmon and Iain MacDonald.
“We came very close,” said Rob. “Literally one shot away from a 3-2 victory.”
Iain was 9-8 up in a championship tie break when his opponent hit a shot that looked to be going out, but Iain instinctively volleyed it back and ended up losing the point, going on to narrowly lose the rubber.
Rob had earlier won his singles match on a championship tie break before teaming up with Iain to claim victory in their doubles match in straight sets.
Jim and Seabury put up a good performance in their two rubbers, especially in the second one against the singles players, going down 4-6, 4-6.
They had lost the first rubber at The Shrewsbury Club 1-6, 5-7.
