Tennis Shropshire chair Fiona Jones officially opens Wem Tennis Club’s new clubhouse

Tennis Shropshire chair Fiona Jones had the honour of officially opening Wem Tennis Club’s new clubhouse.

Wem - named Shropshire’s club of the year in the annual Lawn Tennis Association Awards - put together a busy programme of events to run alongside the official opening.

A number of delicious tennis-themed cakes were made in a Bake Off competition.

Games and activities also took place, with Andy Hawke hitting the day’s fastest serve.

Fiona said: “It was a lovely afternoon at Wem. Everyone was very welcoming and there were lots of people having fun and enjoying the fruits of all the hard work they have put in.

“They have done a great job with the clubhouse and there’s even a new ‘Dave’s Shed’ - which was officially opened by the town’s mayor on the same day - where coach Dave Parry can store everything he needs.

“Such a friendly and well run club is a great asset to Wem and to tennis in Shropshire generally.”
