There's still time to enter Tennis Shropshire's County Championships
Entries are still being accepted for the annual County Championships, always a highlight in Shropshire’s tennis calendar, which start this weekend.
The popular tournament, previously known as the County Closed, begins at The Shrewsbury Club on Sunday and will run throughout next week until Saturday, August 31.
A club challenge event for junior players will be held on Saturday, with the emphasis on fun, ahead of the main draw matches in the Championships getting under way the following day.
Entries are invited from players, both boys and girls, to compete from eight and under right up to 18 and under in a host of singles and doubles events.
An adult event, which is always eagerly awaited by competing players, is also included in a busy schedule.
The finals will take place next Friday and Saturday, when the presentation of trophies will also take place at The Shrewsbury Club.
“The County Championships has become a real festival of tennis, which is what we want it to be,” said Simon Jones, the chairman of Tennis Shropshire.
“While we will be crowning county champions in the various age groups, it’s more important to make the Championships a festival and that everybody taking part has a great week and enjoys competing.
“Simon Haddleton does a phenomenal job running this event, looking after all the entires and the format, and it’s a hugely popular week for Shropshire tennis players.”
To help younger players prepare for the tournament, a number of smaller competitions have been held around the county in recent weeks, The Road to the County Championships, at Ludlow Castle Tennis Club, Ellesmere College, Shrewsbury Lawn Tennis Club and Telford Tennis Centre.
