W60 Ladies Tournament
We want to let you know about the forthcoming W60 Ladies Tournament being held in Shropshire, hosted by the Shrewsbury Club. There has been a unique website set up for the event that is now live and you are able to purchase tickets using the website using
the link below:
A key part of the website will be a section on "get playing" tennis and we want to promote the opportunities in Clubs across Shropshire for people to get started. If you have anything that you want to promote then please e mail Dave Courteen MD of the Shrewsbury Club in the first instance ([email protected]) advising him of what event(s) you have planned.
There are a number of events going on throughout the week of the tournament that runs from March 30th – April 5th this year the ITF World Tennis Tour is coming to the indoor courts at The Shrewsbury Club for a Challenger level event which is likely to see players from within the top 100 in the world in the town including the likes of British players, Heather Watson, Katie Boulter and Harriet Dart, subject to injury and form. This is the biggest event in Women's Tennis in the UK in 2020 outside of the grass court season. We want to use this to raise the profile of tennis, and our Tennis Clubs in Shropshire. The BBC will be televising the event on the red button which will be a great platform to build on.
A Tennis Ball Trail is being created around Shrewsbury with 12 4ft high caricature tennis balls around the town for the six weeks prior to the event. This will help promote the event and tennis in general. People will be encouraged to go around the town and collect the codewords on each ball to be entered into a competition with the chance to win prizes including free tickets to the World Tour tennis.
There will be a pop-up shop unit in Pride Hill solely to promote the World Tour and our Tennis Clubs from mid January through to mid April.
We are hosting an event for 14-18 year olds on the Wednesday of the tournament week (April 1st) to promote careers in sport that don't involve playing or coaching. There will be professionals to meet who have forged tennis related careers in the media, player management, administration, umpiring & refereeing and data analysis. This is a free event which we hope will attract over 100 students and they will get to watch some of the tennis too. If you know a school that would love to be involved we want to know.
On Saturday 4th April, semi-final day, we are holding a Family Fan Zone day at the World Tour event with the intention to attract 500 families to experience tennis. There will be the chance to have a hit on court with some of the leading players in the tournament, interactive tennis games, fastest serve competition, watch the World Tour semi-finals, and enjoy street food, from wood fired pizzas to Planet Doughnut tennis ball decorated doughnuts. It will be a festival of tennis!
How can you help?
There are a number of ways that each and every Club and member across Shropshire can get involved and I list them below:
Are you running any adult beginners or junior tennis courses starting either in the Easter holidays or later in April next year? If so, please forward us the details and we will put it on the website, in the pop-up shop on Pride Hill and at the World Tour event itself. If not, why not talk to your Committee about holding such a course and we will promote it for you? Let's be a part of getting more people playing the game
Can you provide us with a coaching assistant to help with the games and activities in the family fanzone on 4th April? Just a few hours would be great
Please promote the Careers in Sport Day on 1st April to all 14-18 year olds in your Club – schools will give them permission to attend and are aware of the event. I've attached a leaflet about this event to help you spread the word
The event will require 80 Volunteers to make it happen. Do you have any members who might be willing to get involved in volunteering, from court stewarding, being on the welcome desk through to supporting the players in the player lounge? If so, please forward them the attached information sheet which has the details about how they can apply to volunteer.
Encourage and promote the Tennis Trail in Shrewsbury – the more people who take part the better support we will get from sponsors etc. who are vital in funding the event
Encourage your Club Members to attend the event and buy tickets from mid-December on the website www.worldtennistourshrewsbury.com – we want to achieve a sell-out tournament
We can't stress enough that this is such an exciting opportunity that we have been given; to promote Tennis in Shropshire, to promote our Clubs and to see world class tennis on our doorstep. We will only continue to get these opportunities if we make this a success and ensure that we get our members watching the tennis and we encourage those experiencing tennis for the first time to pick up a racket.
We really hope we can count on your support to deliver this and with audience we will be attracting for the ITF W60 Ladies World Tennis Tour it would be great to show what Shropshire can do to promote tennis.
