Shropshire's Roan Jones enjoying impressive results on World Tennis Tour

Shropshire's Roan Jones continues to impress on the World Tennis Tour ahead of representing his home county in next week's LTA Summer County Cup.

The world-ranked 22-year-old is currently playing in Tunisia as he looks to make an impact on the World Tennis Tour.

Roan did just that last week at the M15 Monastir tournament as he enjoyed excellent runs in both the singles and doubles events.

Five victories saw him progress from the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw quarter-finals of the singles, with his run eventually ended in the last eight by French player Paul Barbier Gazeu in a deciding third set.

Partnering Bulgarian player Viktor Markov, Roan went even further in the doubles, progressing to last weekend's final, where they were narrowly edged out 10-8 in a third set tiebreak by Nikita Ianin and Karim Mabrouk.

It was the first final on the World Tennis Tour - World Tennis is the new name for the International Tennis Federation - that Roan, from Shrewsbury, has played.

Roan is enjoying another good week in the latest M15 Monastir tournament having again advanced from the qualifying rounds to take his place in the main draw.

Alex Parry, the captain of Shropshire's men's tennis team, keeps in regular contact with Roan and is pleased to see him playing so well.

"Roan's been in Tunisia for the last three weeks," said Alex. "The second one went very well, particularly in reaching the doubles final, and this week he's going well again and having another good run before he comes back for the County Cup."

Roan recently graduated from North Carolina University, after transferring from the University of Alabama, with his time in the USA really helping to develop his tennis.

Returning to England, he has now joined Loughborough Tennis and will study an MSc in finance at Loughborough University, having reached impressive career high US rankings in college tennis of No. 38 in singles and No. 20 in doubles.

Alex added: "Since Roan got his first world ranking points, he hadn't played a World Tennis Tour event for more than nine months because the collegiate system in America doesn't really have time in its schedule for it.

"Now he's back he wants to give it a good 12, 18 months to be able to really attack it and see how far he can get, which you can only admire. Having been in his shoes, you only get one chance, so you might as well go for it."

Alex is now looking forward to welcoming Roan back into the Shropshire team for next week's LTA Summer County Cup, with the county's men's team heading to Cromer on the Norfolk coast to play in Group 4.

It's the highest level they have ever played in the prestigious event after enjoying back-to-back promotions in the last two years.

Alex said: "We've got Roan for the first four days and then he has an international tournament in Dublin, so I've got to make use of him the best I can until next Thursday.

"He's quite rightly putting his professional career at the forefront, so we will lose him for a day when he heads to Ireland, but it will be great to have him in the team again.

"Let's hope he can continue his good run with his doubles partner Luke Henley after they won all 15 of their matches in last year's Summer County Cup."
